Renting for the first time?

There are a few basic steps to renting an apartment:

  • Determine your budget: Figure out how much you can afford to pay in rent each month. Keep in mind that you may also have to pay additional costs like utilities, internet, and cable.
  • Search for apartments: Look for apartments that fit your budget and meet your other requirements (e.g. number of bedrooms, location). You can search online, drive around neighborhoods you are interested in, or use a rental agency to help you find a place.
  • Tour apartments: Once you have found some apartments you are interested in, schedule a tour to see the unit in person. This will give you a chance to get a feel for the place and ask the landlord any questions you may have.
  • Apply for the apartment: If you decide you want to rent the apartment, the landlord will likely ask you to fill out an application. This will usually include information about your employment, income, and rental history. The landlord will use this information to decide if you are a good candidate to rent their apartment.
  • Sign the lease: If the landlord approves your application, you will be asked to sign a lease. This is a legally binding document that outlines the terms of your tenancy, including the length of the lease, the amount of rent you will pay, and any rules or restrictions. Make sure you read and understand the lease before you sign it.
  • Pay the rent and move in: Once you have signed the lease, you will need to pay the first month's rent and any security deposit required by the landlord. After that, you can move in and start enjoying your new apartment!
